Disconnected
A fascination with the inconspicuous or an overlooked detail which may be subtle, delicate or faint inspires Susie as an artist. Captivated by the botanical world with its diverse array of forms, colours, patterns and shapes and scale; she is often found gazing at the ground below in search of the next endangered specimen to add to her collection. She believes truth comes from the observance of nature and society’s hurried life overlooks and distances us from it. This series utilises material qualities which are simple, irregular and earthy suggesting natural processes. Challenging aesthetics by contrasting the perfect, smooth and symmetrical with the rough, irregular and textured opens up a dialogue about the notion of ‘the sublime’ found in beauty and decay. It is hoped the technique of ‘repoussoir’ (illusion of depth) invites the viewer to look closer and reconnect with the natural world, valuing not merely its visual beauty but the vital role it holds to the existence of all life forms on the planet.
